  1. Great job, Christopher. The American Dream is fundamental to American political rhetoric, and I am excited to see how it has been adapted in recent years. In your research, did you encounter much push-back/rejection of the American Dream (i.e. the American Dream is broken)? Social/Cultural/Economic tensions might require adaptation for the American Dream to remain relevant. Congrats and good luck after graduation.

  2. Chris -- Nice work! This is an interesting and evolving topic. As Dr. Ohl mentions, there are a lot of discussions around the rhetoric of the American Dream and what it means (e.g., Can it exist without Equality of Opportunity?). Thus, getting towards your discussion about who has access to the American Dream is important. Beyond these texts, do you think the gig economy has altered the American Dream? How about this pandemic experience down the road?

  3. This is a very important topic, and one that I am currently grappling with. I'm interested to know what function(s) the American Dream has, in your opinion? Is it an economic function? A political one? A social one? Has that function changed over the years/generations? Very interesting work!

  4. Hi Chris,
Great start to what I think could be an even bigger project for you, if you choose to pursue it!
I appreciate the comments of Dr. Ohl and Janell (hey, y'all!) in regards to the pushback. In wonder: how did you choose your texts? What made you decide that those in particular would be what you should look at? I ask because I wonder if you could have uncovered some of the more implicit implications of the 'American Dream' given a more diverse text? Or, is this something you could take away from the current project (a direction for future research, perhaps)?

  5. Hi Christopher,
I used to TA for this course in 2013 & 2014 and advised the quantitative and qualitative projects. Your analysis lies outside of my wheelhouse so I am not able to provide much feedback in that capacity. Sorry. But what I can say is that is no small feat to complete a capstone project, but knowing that you completed this while campus was shut down is incredible.
    GBR!
